John J. Callahan Jr. Huntsville, Alabama
JOHN J. CALLAHAN, JR. is a founding partner of Richardson Callahan LLP. A native of New York, he received his B.A. degree (1979) from Columbia College of Columbia University, where he was a student member of the Honors Colloquia on the History of Social and Political Thought. He subsequently received his J.D. degree (1983) from the University of Alabama School of Law, where he was awarded membership in the Order of Barristers. Prior to entering the private practice of law in 1984, he served as law clerk to Alabama Supreme Court Associate Justice Oscar W. Adams, Jr.
Mr. Callahan has represented clients in various state and federal courts, trial and appellate, as well as in federal administrative forums, including the Armed Services and General Services Boards of Contract Appeals, the U.S. Small Business Administration's Office of Hearings and Appeals, and the U.S. General Accounting Office (Comptroller General) and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He also is registered as a mediator for civil matters (other than domestic relations) with the Alabama Center for Dispute Resolution, having served as a court-appointed mediator. Additionally, he is a member of the Panel of Neutrals for the United States District Court, Northern District of Alabama. His principal areas of practice are: government contracts, labor and employment law (representing employers), and business and commercial law. He also has considerable experience defending personal injury actions, including claims for product liability.
Mr. Callahan is a member of: the Alabama State Bar (admitted 1983) (member, Labor & Employment Section); the Huntsville-Madison County (Chairman, Law Day 1999 Committee), American (member, Public Contract Law and Labor and Employment Law Sections) and Federal Bar Associations; the Defense Research Institute; the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association and the Area Labor-Management Relations Committee. He also is an elected Fellow of the National Contract Management Association (president, Huntsville Chapter, 1995-96; national director, 1996-97).
Mr. Callahan has presented lectures and seminars on employment law and government contract law topics for the Public Contract Law Section of the American Bar Association, the North Alabama Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, various chapters of the National Contract Management Association (NCMA), the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce and the United States Army Missile Command, among others. He also has presented lectures on the Alabama Competitive Bid Law to the Huntsville chapters of the Construction Specification Institute and NCMA.
In addition to his professional undertakings, Mr. Callahan is active in civic, cultural and church matters. He currently serves as a member of the City of Huntsville's Air Pollution Control Board by mayoral appointment. He also is the Chairman of the Board of the Huntsville Chapter of the National Conference For Community and Justice (founded as the National Conference of Christians and Jews). Mr. Callahan is a member of the Huntsville Rotary Club.
Mr. Callahan previously served as chairman of the Small Business Committee of the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce. He also has served as a member of his church's pastoral council.
